Having won the 3A state title two of the last three years (Dixie), Region 9 has positioned itself for another title with all three off its teams advancing to winners' play after the first round of the 3A championships.
However, after quarterfinal action Thursday at Utah Valley State College, when Dixie takes on Region 9 and cross-town rival Pine View at 4 p.m. and Snow Canyon battles Carbon at 1 p.m at UVSC, at least one Region 9 team will be sent to the losers bracket.In first round action, Dixie advanced with a 15-3 victory over Delta, while Pine View beat Region 10 champion Union 8-5. Snow Canyon dumped Lehi 9-7, while Carbon upended Emery 9-3.
In losers out contests Thursday, Lehi battles Emery at 1 p.m. at BYU, while Delta swings bats with Union at 4 p.m. at BYU.
Action continues Friday with games at BYU and UVSC.
2A State Championships
With 1996 champ Manti bumped from this year's tournament, Class 2A will be looking for a new champion.
In quarterfinal action Thursday, Beaver travels to No. 1 Gunnison, No. 2 Grantsville hosts No. 3 Parowan, No. 4 Grand hosts Morgan, while No. 5 Juab travels to San Juan. All games at scheduled for 3 p.m.
