HARGROVE GETS EXTENSION: Cleveland Indians manager Mike Hargrove, whose team has the best record in baseball the last three-plus seasons, got a long-awaited contract extension despite the team's early struggles this year.
Hargrove, 47, in his sixth full season as Indians manager, received a two-year extension, with a club option for 2000.
MURRAY APPEARS IN GAME NO. 3,000: Anaheim designated hitter Eddie Murray became the sixth player to appear in 3,000 games during the Angels 8-7 victory over Chicago.
Murray joined a list that includes Pete Rose and Hall of Famers Carl Yastrzemski, Hank Aaron, Ty Cobb and Stan Musial.
CAMINITI SIDELINED: Ken Caminiti, the National League's Most Valuable Player last season, was placed on the 15-day disabled list with a strained right hamstring by the San Diego Padres.
The third baseman injured the hamstring April 20 and missed two games. He re-aggravated the injury running on May 11.
WILD THING RELEASED: Reliever Mitch Williams, whose has career went into a nosedive after allowing Joe Carter's deciding home run in the 1993 World Series, was given his unconditional release by the Kansas City Royals. The left-hander was 0-1 with a 10.80 ERA in seven appearances this season.

KING SUED BY NORRIS: WBC welterweight champion Terry Norris sued boxing promoter Don King for $64.5 million and asked the court nullify a contract that his manager allegedly misled him into signing.
The contract gives Norris "only illusory compensation" for a championship match and binds him to King for virtually the rest of his career.
Norris, 29, signed the contract in October 1996 "because Mr. (Joseph) Sayatovich (his manager) and Mr. King lied to him," according to papers filed in Manhattan's State Supreme Court.
DOUGLAS WINS BY DISQUALIFICATION: Former heavyweight champion Buster Douglas defeated journeyman Louis Monaco by disqualification after Monaco hit Douglas after the first round bell.

INDY 500: Johnny O'Connell and Tyce Carlson found rides for the Indianapolis 500 as substitutes for drivers injured in practice.
O'Connell will drive for A.J. Foyt, replacing Scott Sharp, who was knocked unconscious in a crash Friday at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway, and still is being monitored for a small brain contusion.
Rookie Carlson comes to Paul Diatlovich's PDM Racing, where he will fill in for John Paul Jr., who fractured his lower right leg and left heel in a separate crash on Friday.

SABRES GM MUCKLER FIRED: The Buffalo Sabres fired coach general manager John Muckler today after two years of feuding with popular coach Ted Nolan and team executives.
Muckler had been in trouble for the last several months, and speculation about his departure increased in the last three days since the Sabres were eliminated from the playoffs by Philadelphia.
The Sabres called a noon news conference to announce the dismissal. Muckler earlier this week said he had no idea his job was in jeopardy.
