ALL-BIG WEST SOFTBALL: Utah State softball players Tammy Alcantar and Rhealee Thorn earned All-Big West honors after being selected as part of the 1997 All-Big West softball team that was announced today after a vote by the conference coaches.
Alcantar, a sophomore from Pacioma, Calif., was named as one of the first team outfielders. She led the Aggies in hitting with a .339 average as well as virtually every other offensive category, including doubles (20), home runs (4), RBI (21), hits (58), and slugging (.550). Her 20 doubles led the Big West and she is currently 12th in the nation in doubles per game (0.37). From her center field position she led all USU outfielders with 12 assists.
Thorn was named to the second team as a utility player. A senior from Glendale, Ariz., she was Utah State's top pitcher this season, posting a 11-15 record with a 2.47 ERA. She ended her career with 54 wins on the mound, fourth on the all-time USU list. At the plate Thorn was fourth on the team with a .263 average and led the team in runs scored with 23. She ended the season by getting three hits in three consecutive games to earn Big West Field Player of the Week honors.
Junior colleges
SLCC BASEBALL: Three members of the SLCC men's baseball team, which completed its first season a week ago, were honored as second team All-Region 18 - sophomores Greg Larson and Troy Beckman and freshman Rusty Gray.
Larson, a catcher from Hillcrest High, batted .363 with 10 doubles and 20 RBIs. Beckman, a pitcher from Viewmont High, had a 4-3 record with a 3.52 ERA and 68 strikeouts in 64 innings. Gray, a designated hitter from Taylorsville High, batted .373 with 11 doubles, three home runs and 30 RBIs.
Weber State
ALL-BIG SKY TENNIS TEAM: Blair O'Hara of the Weber State men's tennis team and Ande Tulp of the women's team, were each named to their respective Big Sky Conference All-Conference tennis teams.
O'Hara, a sophomore from Mount Eliza, Australia, was Weber State's No. 1 player this past season and had an overall singles record of 11-12, 7-10 in dual action, and a doubles record of 6-14. At the Region Seven ITA championship, O'Hara won three matches in the main draw before losing to Ben Davidson of Boise State.
Tulp, a junior from Tallinn, Estonia, is a three-time All-Big Sky Conference pick. Tulp had an overall singles record this season of 12-3, 11-2 in dual matches, aloalong with a 10-5 doubles record.
