For many boating enthusiasts, Memorial Day weekend is the kickoff for the summer season.
Gunlock Reservoir and Quail Creek are popular sites, but the holiday usually sends area residents to Lake Powell or Lake Mead, said John Ibach, manager of Snow Canyon Park and Gunlock Reservoir."Memorial Day is a day traditionally when people take the three-day weekend and go to bigger lakes," Ibach said.
However, new regulations on boating days at Quail Creek have increased traffic at Gunlock. Because of that, Ibach is not sure what kind of Memorial Day weekend Gunlock will see.
"I would be prepared for a crowd," Ibach said.
Gunlock has no fees, but boats must be registered and outfitted with safety equipment, Ibach said. Camping is permitted but not encouraged because there are no organized facilities.
It's too late to plan on camping at Quail Creek. There is no room left, said staff at the state park reservations office. Visitors may boat but may not stay the night.
For those going to Lake Powell, Park Ranger Eileen Martinez advises "come early."
"Our facilities will be maxed out," she said. "Friday afternoon is the big rush so come on Thursday or even Wednesday to avoid it."
She also suggested staying a day later to avoid the long lines of people leaving.
The National Park Service is now charging fees for camping and boating on Lake Powell.
