A couple withdrew a $3 million donation to the Central Park Children's Zoo because they were upset that their gift was to be commemorated only with a small plaque.

Edith and Henry Everett's gift would have financed half the zoo's renovation costs. They withdrew the gift after the city Art Commission approved a plan for a commemorative plaque with 2-inch high letters to hang over the zoo's entrance.

Commission member Bud Konheim said it appeared the Everetts' philanthropic commitment was "proportionate to the size of the letters in their name."

Their first installment check for $750,000 was returned to them.

"We were not talking about neon lights," Edith Everett told the New York Times. "We were talking about a very modest plaque that would give acknowledgement to a very sizable gift by anybody's standard."
