Think military, and who springs to mind? Not Phyllis Diller. But never mind. She is to be the master of ceremonies Friday in New York at the Plaza for a night billed as a Military Ball.

It is a benefit for the Soldiers', Sailors' and Airmen's Club, which offers accommodations for visiting military men and women and veterans."I think the military should be respected for protecting the nation," Diller said Wednesday in a moment of seriousness. Then she said that over the years she had gone out with a few military men. "I preferred generals," she said, "but I usually got someone who who was AWOL and wanted in four states."
