"Don't waste shots on the golf course. Sometimes we try to make a 'great escape' to get a score that is perhaps better than we are entitled to. If you hit an errant shot, play your next stroke in a sensible manner so you don't have a disastrous score on a hole. You can salvage a round when you have a score one stroke above your par. But it's much more difficult to recover with a score three or four strokes higher."

Rick Mears served under his father Russ Mears for several years at Oakridge Country Club, before taking over the head pro job himself. He likes Jack Nicklaus and Fred Couples and enjoys teaching junior golfers and seeing them succeed. He also gets a kick out of running efficient golf tournaments at his club, which are enjoyed by the members.
