A mountain climber from Utah who attempted the avalanche gulch route up Mount Shasta survived a 1,500-foot fall after slipping on ice.

Donald Martin's climbing partner managed to bring him several thousand feet down the northern California mountain after the Monday fall.A rescue team picked up Martin by helicopter after his partner got him as far as the timber line.

Martin, 35, Salt Lake City, was hospitalized in fair condition Tuesday.
