A high-tech Canadian plastics firm heavily courted by other Western cities has picked Tremonton, Box Elder County, as the site for a $17 million plant that initially will employ about 70 people.

Quebec-based Intertape Polymer Group said Tuesday it plans to immediately begin construction on a 16-acre parcel in the Tremonton Industrial Park. The announcement was made by the Economic Development Corp. of Utah, which helped woo the firm.

The plant, expected to be up and running by the end of the year, will be the Western operations center for the company's shrink wrap and shrink film, used as coverings for industrial shipping and smaller retail products such as cassette tapes.

The state-of-the-art facility and average $24,000 salaries - 27 percent more than the Box Elder County average - will make it a valuable employer, Tremonton City Manager Rich Woodworth said.
