Police officers and fire-fighters have uniforms, so why not city council members, too?

The Kaysville City Council now has its own uniform of sorts - matching shirts that will be worn at many of their meetings and other city functions. The matching attire - white shirts with the city logo on them - are a rarity among city councils along the Wasatch Front.

Mayor H. Arthur Johnson said the council got the idea for the shirts after seeing what some other city councils in Utah were wearing at a Utah League of Cities and Towns meeting earlier this year.

"We thought we ought to do that," Johnson said. "It gives you a sense of unity."

Other than what Johnson describes as a modest fee to set up the city logo for such shirts, council members paid for their own shirts ($26 each) and so very little city funds were used.

Johnson said the special shirts are also available for purchase to all other city employees.

But during the council's April 15 meeting, where the shirts were to make their debut, only two councilmen and the mayor wore them.

"We made a pact we would all wear our Kaysville shirts," chastised Mayor H. Author Johnson.
