Ten Utah educators have been selected to receive a 1997 Huntsman Award for Excellence in Education.
Several hundred nominations were received for the awards, "designed to recognize, encourage and reward Utah's most important public servants - schoolteachers, administrators, employees and volunteer workers," the board of judges for the awards said.Recipients will be honored at a banquet Friday, May 9, in the Salt Lake Marriott Hotel. The Jon M. Huntsman family will present each award winner with a $10,000 check and an engraved crystal obelisk trophy for their "distinguished service to public education in Utah."
Award categories and recipients:
Elementary teachers - Julie Anne Cook, Woodruff Elementary School, Logan, and Patricia (Trish) Wade, Jackson Elementary School, Salt Lake City.
Junior high teachers - Mary Eyer, Eisenhower Junior High School, Taylors-ville, and Janice Mayne, American Fork Junior High School, American Fork.
Senior high teachers - Stephen C. Jackson, Viewmont High School, Bountiful, and David Miller, Davis High School, Kaysville.
Elementary principal - Jane Larson, Nibley Park Elementary School, Salt Lake City.
Junior high principal - D. Lee Jenson, Midvale Middle School, Midvale.
Senior high principal - Randall J. Merrill, Timpview High School, Provo.
Volunteer/other school employee - Susan R. Craw, a volunteer at Minersville School, Minersville, Beaver County.
"The objective of the Huntsman Awards is to . . . inspire and refresh teachers, principals, employees and volunteers in their commitment to excellence in education," said Jim Kimball of the Jon M. Huntsman staff.
