Unseasonable cold blamed for lagging spring sales

SHARE Unseasonable cold blamed for lagging spring sales

Unseasonably cool weather through much of the country last month discouraged shoppers from buying spring wares, resulting in lower-than-expected sales at many of the nation's biggest retailers.

From discounters to specialty stores, most retailers expected rising temperatures in April to boost sales of warm-weather products, like floral sundresses, new wheelbarrows or deck furniture. But "cooler weather hurt seasonal categories," said Joseph Ronning, a retail analyst at Brown Brothers Harriman. "That left sales for the month generally disappointing for many retailers."

It was another weak month for many retailers, whose sales have been lagging for the last year. Despite the high levels of consumer confidence, many shoppers still watch their spending.
