Utah Symphony conductor Joseph Silverstein plays with sixth-grade violinists at Jackson Elementary, above, while students Shalika Scott, Elvira Shay and Michele Lustri, right, listen as the maestro weaves his magic. Many Jackson students have been guests at Utah Symphony rehearsals and look upon Silverstein as a role model. Thursday's concert not only allowed them to meet their idol but to play with him and get feedback from him. In addition to performing for and with Silverstein Thursday, the students, who are tuning into music and turning out gangs, performed for their parents and friends at a concert Wednesday night. On Friday, music teacher Patricia Wade, who was recently named one of the 10 Huntsman winners of Excellence in Education, will be honored at a dinner. Wade teaches grades fourth through sixth.
