GAYLE DEAN HUNT passed away May 6, 1997, after an arduous yet uncomplaining battle with cancer.

He was born December 26, 1923, in Elsinore, Utah, to Teancum and Lillie Anderton Hunt. He married Doris Rae Stephens of Montpelier, Idaho, in the Salt Lake Temple in 1956. She passed away in 1962. He married Donna Scharffs Waters in 1965 and they were later divorced. He was preceded in death by his father and mother and a brother, Mack J. Hunt. Gayle is survived by his four children Stephany (Steven) Wuthrich, Paul Dean Hunt, Mary Alene Hunt, and Jennifer (Gideon) Malherbe; by five grandchildren, Cinnamon, Abbey, Sean, and Krisann Wuthrich and Olivia Hansen, all of Salt Lake City; by three stepchildren, Royd, Kevin, and Danny Waters and their families; by a brother Fred T. (Thurva) Hunt of Richfield, a sister-in-law Sylvia Parker Hunt, two sisters Connie Shipp Christensen and Sandy Shipp Fisher; and by many nieces and nephews who loved him and looked to him for sage advice and loyal support. Gayle has always been our family anchor. We will sorely miss him.Gayle's youth was spent in Sevier County where he learned to appreciate the rigorous but satisfying work involved with farming, the importance of a formal education, and the simple joy of serving others--three values that would continue to frame his entire life. At South Sevier High School he excelled in debate and served as Student Body President both there and at Elsinore Jr. High. During World War II he served his country in the Army Air Corps between 1942 and 1944 when he was honorably discharged. He graduated from the University of Utah where he affiliated with Phi Delta Theta fraternity and also served in the MIA youth program of the LDS Church.

Gayle earned a Juris Doctor degree from the University of Utah Law School and did post-graduate work at the University of San Francisco. He then spent three years homesteading a farm along the Columbia River in Pasco, Washington, before returning to Utah to serve as an attorney in the Salt Lake City Attorney's Office and eventually to establish his own private law practice. Gayle served as a member of the Utah State Bar Association for over 48 years, and was admitted to practice before the Tenth Circuit Court of Appeals and the U. S. Supreme Court.

Gayle was a member of the American Bar Assoc., American Trial Lawyers Assoc., and the Salt Lake County Bar. In addition he enjoyed service and rich friendships in several organizations including the PTA, the LDS Church, International Footprint Assoc., and the Fraternal Order of Eagles. In recent years much of Gayle's spare time away from his law office has been spent growing wheat and fighting thistles and sporadic weather on his farm in Soda Springs, Idaho; in studying and provoking us to study the great ideas in classical literature; and in checking up on the needs of friends and family. We loved Gayle's good heart, his nonjudgmental concern for all of us, his intellectual curiosity, and his sharp sense of humor. His passing leaves a great void in our lives.

Funeral services will be held Monday, May 12, at 11:00 a.m. at Larkin Mortuary, 260 East South Temple, Salt Lake City. Friends may call Sunday evening between the hours of 6:00 and 8:00 p.m. at Larkin Mortuary and one hour prior to the services. Interment will be at the Monroe Cemetery in Monroe, Utah, at approximately 4:30 p.m. on Monday.
