The Utah Nike Classic, the tournament that gave Utahns the chance to see golfers such as Tom Lehman, John Daly and Ernie Els before they became stars, is history.
The PGA Tour finally pulled the plug on the tournament after Utah officials were unable to come up with enough sponsors to run the tournament this September. Despite its problems, the tournament was going to be played one last time Sept. 12-14 under the direction of the PGA Tour, but tour officials have replaced it with a new tournament in San Jose, Calif.Utah PGA Section executive director Jeff Beaudry said declining sponsorships and a lack of public interest were two main factors in the demise of the tournament. "The tournament could have probably broken even, but if we weren't able to hand out a check to charity, we weren't going to run it," he said.
The tournament has annually raised about $25,000 for the Special Olympics.
BYU adds assistants to women's team
Brigham Young University Women's Athletic Director Elaine Michaelis and head coach Trent Shippen have announced the appointments of Cindy Lindsay and Tom Gneiting as women's basketball assistant coaches.
Lindsay, a former all-state player at Orem High School, who then played at the University of Utah, was Shippen's assistant at Ricks College for the past three years.
Gneiting joined the BYU women's basketball staff in January on an interim basis.
He played on BYU's men's basketball team from 1983-87 gaining All-WAC and Academic All-WAC honors.
Gneiting also spent nine years playing professional basketball in Spain, Turkey and the CBA.
