A 12-year-old girl is being questioned in connection with a bathroom fire that resulted in the evacuation of Kearns Junior High School Wednesday.

Salt Lake County Fire crews responded to the school, 4040 W. 5305 South, shortly after noon when a fire was spotted in a girls bathroom, said Salt Lake County acting fire Capt. B. Wash. The fire started on a plastic toilet paper dispenser and burned a bathroom stall wall. However, a student put the fire out with water before firefighters arrived, said detective Rex Nelson, of the Interagency Fire Investigation Unit.

Meanwhile, more than 1,300 students and staff were evacuated.

"It wasn't a huge fire, but it was an inhabitable structure and there were people in the building," Nelson said.
