Upon arriving home from North Carolina Tuesday night, Utah athletic director Chris Hill was keeping mum on his interview with Duke University officials earlier in the day.

"There's nothing more that I can tell you," he said.Hill is one of the two finalists for the open athletic director job at Duke to succeed Tom Butters, who announced his retirement in September. Hill, who has been the athletic director at Utah since 1987, had his official interview in Durham, N.C. Tuesday after meeting with Duke officials earlier in the month at an NCAA convention.

Iowa State athletic director Gene Smith was set to be interviewed Wednesday. The 42-year-old Smith has been at Iowa State since 1993 after serving as the athletic director at Eastern Michigan for eight years.

One of the few African-American Division I athletic directors, Smith holds a leadership position on the powerful Division I-A Management Council. He has been mentioned as a candidate for several jobs in recent years, including Georgia Tech, Michigan State and Purdue.

Although the post has been open since September, the new athletic director was supposedly going to be approved at a mid-February meeting of the Duke board of trustees. However, one source close to the scene believes the announcement could come by the end of this week.

When he was asked what the timetable was for the decision, Hill replied, "There's not much else I can tell you."
