General Motors Corp. lost $809 million in the third quarter because of two parts-plant strikes that virtually brought its North American production to a halt for several weeks.
The loss amounted to an unexpectedly large $1.28 a share, compared with a profit of $1.07 billion, or $1.35 a share, during the July-September period of 1997.The nation's biggest automaker's revenue fell to $34.4 billion from $41.89 billion a year ago.
