Gene Gates Leonhardt, devoted wife and mother, quietly passed away of natural causes October 11, 1998 at the age of 79.
She is survived by her husband of 61 years; sister, Kathryn Stokes of Yucaipa, California; brother, Daniel Gates of Salt Lake and sister-in-law, Audrian Gates of Salt Lake. Gene was preceded in death by sister, Violet Gates and brother, James Gates.Raised and educated in Salt Lake City, Gene married Heinz W. Leonhardt August 6, 1937. They have three sons, Raymond of Hyrum, Utah, Gordon who lives in Salt Lake, and Steven who resides in Tooele, Utah. She dearly loved her 10 grandchildren and her five great-grandchildren.
Gene was gregarious, active, and energetic. In quiet ways she helped many people in need. She traveled widely throughout North America and Europe. Gene and Heinz lived in Albuquerque, N. M. and Chicago, Illinois before retirement and their return to the Salt Lake Valley. As a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, she gave service in the Primary, Young Womens Program and Relief Society.
Graveside services will be held at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, October 14, 1998, Wasatch Lawn Memorial Park (Olympus Section). Bishop Vern Ferrin of the Kenwood 1st Ward will conduct the services. Friends and family may call at the Wasatch Lawn Mortuary, 3401 South Highland Drive from 9:45-10:45 a.m. prior to services.
