Salt Lake County Sheriff Aaron Kennard has been named a member of the National Association of Counties' Justice and Public Safety Board Steering Committee, according to an association press release.

The committee is one of 13 policymaking arms of the association, President Betty Lou Ward said. Each committee consists of 50 to 60 county officials who meet several times each year to discuss critical issues in local government. The Justice and Public Safety committee focuses on criminal justice planning, law enforcement, courts, corrections, community crime prevention, juvenile crime and delinquency, emergency management and fire prevention and control.

Committee recommendations on legislative policies and goals then are considered by the association's national board and added to its American County Platform, which is the basis of the associations work lobby efforts before Congress and with the White House, Ward said.
