A Highland High School student was critically injured when he jumped from a freeway over-pass in an apparent suicide attempt Wednesday afternoon, police said.

The boy, 17, was upset because the relationship with his girlfriend recently ended, investigators believe. He stood on the I-80 overpass on 1700 East and waited for a truck, Salt Lake Police Lt. Arthur Healey said. When the boy saw a large freight truck heading east, he hurdled the guardrail and fell 24 feet to the pavement.

Healey said the truck stopped about 10 feet from the boy. A University Hospital spokeswoman said he was "extremely critical" Thursday.
