Quynn Tebbs is going to play for the Wildcats after all. Just not the Arizona Wildcats.
A month after leaving Arizona to be closer to his family in Utah -- in particular his ailing grandfather -- Tebbs announced his intentions to transfer to Weber State.Tebbs, a Bingham High alumnus and former Deseret News all-stater, trimmed his options to Utah State and WSU before finally choosing to go to Ogden.
The 23-year-old guard, who served an LDS mission before playing at Arizona last year, figures he'll get more playing time with Weber's new coaches than he would under Stew Morrill at USU. His cousin, Justyn Tebbs, earned All-Big Sky honors playing for Weber in 1995-96.
Because he's transferring from Arizona, Quynn Tebbs can't play for Weber until some point in the 1999-2000 season. Whether he'll be able to play at the beginning of the season or in mid-December depends on whether the NCAA approves an appeal he's filing. He is registering for classes at Weber State for winter semester beginning in January.
Had he not transferred, Tebbs, who averaged 2.3 points as a freshman, likely would have been part of Arizona's regular rotation as a sophomore this season. He even participated in the Wildcats' preseason Red-Blue scrimmage game, in which he scored nine points.
Shortly after that, Tebbs decided to move back home in early November to be closer to his grandfather, Don Nydegger, who has acute leukemia.
