COTTONWOOD -- A contractor digging along a roadway broke open a gas line Tuesday, forcing the evacuation of a local restaurant and forcing a two-hour road closure.

The break in the 4-inch line occurred near 6795 So. 1400 East about 10 a.m. on the east side of the street, Salt Lake County Fire Capt. Bill Brass said.Shutting off the gas took about 45 minutes, during which time firefighters evacuated about 40 people from an adjacent Appleby's restaurant. Salt Lake County sheriff's deputies diverted traffic off of 1300 East while Questar Gas crews shut the line down and then repaired it. The road was closed for about two hours.
