Kathy Bates replaces the late Roddy McDowall on the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences governing board. She joins Gregory Peck and Karl Malden on the three-person board, the first to be made up entirely of Oscar winners. McDowall died of cancer Oct. 3. Bates' term was announced Tuesday.

Bates, 50, won her Academy Award for her portrayal of an obsessed fan in the 1990 movie "Misery." She has also appeared in "Titanic," "Fried Green Tomatoes" and "The Waterboy."

MOST TRUSTED MAN IN U.S. DOES OK IN FRANCE, TOO

Walter Cronkite is the most trusted man in America. Apparently they think highly of him in France, too.

The American Society of the French Legion of Honor gave the 82-year-old Cronkite its highest award Wednesday, the Medal for Distinguished Achievement.

"Walter Cronkite's active involvement in reporting the Second World War and its repercussions over the following decades made him the voice of America," said Guy Wildenstein, president of the society in New York.

"Mr. Cronkite has been part of virtually every news event in our time, not only on the domestic and international front, but also with respect to our conquest of space."

VETERANS FOUNDATION HONORS THE FUNNY MAN

The comic who gave us "Dorf on Golf" is being saluted as Veteran of the Year.

The nonprofit Veterans Foundation Inc. chose to honor Emmy winner Tim Conway, who served in the Army from 1956 through 1958, for his record of charitable service and his success as an entertainer.

He will receive the award at a Friday luncheon stocked with fellow entertainers, including Steve Allen, Harvey Korman, Carol Burnett, Ernest Borgnine and Fred Travalena.

"Because of the patriotic men and women that elect to wear a military uniform of a branch of the United States Armed Forces, we are a free nation and we will remain so," Conway said Wednesday.

DUDLEY AND WIFE NO. 4 SPLIT OVER DIFFERENCES

The four-year marriage of Dudley Moore and wife No. 4, Nicole Rothschild, is officially over. Details of the settlement weren't disclosed by the actor's publicist Michelle Bega, but she confirmed Wednesday that the divorce is final. Moore's divorce petition cited irreconcilable differences.
