Lawmakers won't be able to take care of their districts or their families if Speaker-designate Bob Livingston implements his plan for a five-day legislative workweek next year, Georgia Rep. Jack Kingston says. Kingston has gotten 65 GOP colleagues to sign a petition urging Livingston not to tinker with the three-day-a-week legislative schedule that was in vogue during Newt Gingrich's final year as speaker. "You can't be in Washington five days a week and service your district," Kingston said. Kingston also sent Livingston the results of a survey taken after the hectic first 100 days of the 104th Congress, when Republicans pushed through their "Contract with America." Of the 114 members who had served in previous congresses, 102 rated the 104th as less "family friendly."
