Leora Cook Barrus, age 94, passed away December 1, 1998, in Highland, Utah.
She was born March 30, 1904, in Afton, Wyoming, the daughter of Carl and Ella Call Cook. She was a lifelong, devoted member of the LDS Church. Following her studies at Brigham Young University Academy, Leora taught school in Cokeville, Wyoming. She served as a missionary in the North Central States Mission 1924 to 1926. She married Lester Millward Barrus on June 17, 1926 in the Salt Lake Temple. They reared their family in lovely Star Valley, and had lived in Salt Lake City since 1950. Together they filled a mission, 1953 to 1954 to the Eastern Canadian Mission. He preceded her in death on August 15, 1975.Leora was an avid reader and a student of the gospel and served in many positions in the church, among which were organist, Relief Society president, teacher in several organizations. She was also a very creative person--a professional seamstress and an artist with her hands. She was a passionate quilter to the very end, and gave over fifty beautiful quilts to the Primary Childrens Hospital, and many others to family and friends.
Her life was spent in the service of others, and in spite of serious health problems in her advanced years, she remained cheerful.
She is survived by her three children: Jacquetta (John C.) Cook, Dallas, Texas; Lynnette (William M.) Dale, Salt Lake City; Rollin L. (Marjorie) Barrus, Apache Junction, Arizona; nine grandchildren, Roy David, Mary Lynn, Jenene, Nita, Paul, Karyl, Amy, Linda and Ann; 19 great-grandchildren; eight great great-grandchildren; sister, Freda Gease; brother, John Cook. Preceded in death by her parents, two brothers, Carl and Lynne, who died in infancy and sisters, Clella Glazier and Josinette Whiting.
She was deeply loved and will be greatly missed.
Funeral services will be held Saturday, December 5, 1998, at 11 a.m., at the Holbrook Mortuary, 3251 South 2300 East, Salt Lake City, where friends may call Saturday morning, from 9:45 a.m. to 10:45 a.m. for one hour prior to the services. Interment: Fairview City Cemetery, Fairview, Wyoming, Monday, December 7th at 1 p.m. Funeral Directors: The Holbrook Mortuary.
