Kay Keiji Nakamura, a gentle, humble man, who would light up at the sight of his grandchildren, passed away on November 30, 1998 after a brief illness.
Kay, 80, of Salt Lake, was born on April 12,to Chogoro "Frank" and Tane Mayeda Nakamura, and grew up in Soldier Summit and Salt Lake. He graduated from West High School, and received his BA and Master of Arts and Science in Chemistry from the University of Utah. He served honorably in the U.S. Army during World War II.On May 4, 1947, Kay married his best friend and companion, Kiyoko Iwamoto. Soon after, they moved to Kemmerer, Wyoming, where they resided for 40 years. Kay worked as a chemist for the Kemmerer Coal Company until retirement in 1982. They returned to Salt Lake in 1989 to be closer to family.
Kay is survived by his wife and sons, Frank (Kerri), Calvin (Tammy) and Stan (Stephanie) and grandchildren Allison, Sarah, Jani, Michael and Grace. Surviving siblings include, Masaji (Tsuru) Imai, Takae, Aki (Neil) Chow, Masuji "Moose" (Eleanor), and Betty (Ray) Komachi, and many loving nieces and nephews. His brother Karl preceded him in death.
Kay was a pioneering patient in heart bypass surgery, having survived 26 years. He enjoyed golfing and bowling several times a week, and fishing whenever possible. He was an avid University of Utah and Utah Jazz fan, although the Celtics always held a special place in his heart. His memory will live on through the many stories he told at family gatherings and while sharing coffee with friends. He will always be remembered for his contagious grin, crooked ball cap and the distinctive Nakamura gait.
Funeral services are scheduled for 11 a.m, Saturday, December 5, 1998 at Christ Lutheran Church, 240 East 5600 South. Friends may call Friday evening at Memorial Mortuary, 5850 South 900 East from 6 p.m. until 8 p.m. and one hour prior to services at the church.
The family would like to extend sincerest thanks to the friends and family members who have been so loving and supportive.
