PARK CITY -- Past selections from the Sundance Film Festival and the newest film by America's most outrageous director -- John Waters -- dominate this winter's Park City Film Series schedule.
The series begins this week with screenings of the coming-of-age comedy "The Slums of Beverly Hills" (Dec. 4-5) and will continue on consecutive weekends through the end of the year. (All screenings will be held in the James Santy Auditorium, top floor of the Park City Library, 1255 Park Ave.)Other programs in the series include:
"A Soldier's Daughter Never Cries," the newest drama by the Merchant-Ivory filmmaking team. Kris Kristofferson and Leelee Sobieski ("Deep Impact") star in this adaptation of Kaylie Jones' novel, which was based on her real-life relationship with her father, writer James Jones. (Dec. 11-12)
"Next Stop Wonderland," writer/director Brad Anderson's oddball romantic comedy about the (apparently) never-to-happen relationship between two Boston residents, a twentysomething nurse (Hope Davis) and an oceanography student. (Dec. 18-19)
"The Impostors." A throwback to the screwball comedies of the '30s, starring Stanley Tucci (who also co-wrote and directed the film) and Oliver Platt as two out-of-work actors who stow aboard an oceanliner loaded with eccentric passengers. (Dec. 25-26)
"Pecker," the return to filmmaking for Hollywood's master of "bad taste," John Waters. Edward Furlong ("American History X") stars in the black comedy as a young photographer whose work brings bad luck to its unfortunate subjects. (Jan. 1-2)
Each night's screening will be preceded by showings of short works from students in the University of Utah's filmmaking program.
Showtime is 8 p.m. Tickets are $5, $4 for seniors and students. Advance tickets or 10-film passes ($35) are available from the Park City Library or the Park City Dan's Foods location.
