FINLEY, D-BACKS CLOSE: After spending $95.6 million to overhaul their pitching staff, the Arizona Diamondbacks are on the verge of signing center fielder Steve Finley to a four-year contract worth at least $20 million.
HALL BALLOT ANNOUNCED: Nolan Ryan, George Brett, Robin Yount, Carlton Fisk and Dale Murphy head 11 first-time candidates on the Hall of Fame ballot.
The other six first-time eligibles are George Bell, Mike Boddicker, John Candelaria, Charlie Leibrandt, Frank Tanana and Mike Witt.

TYSON REGISTERS: Mike Tyson registered himself as a sex offender in Arizona as part of his planned move to Phoenix. Tyson went to the Maricopa County Sheriff's office Thursday to be fingerprinted and photographed. He was convicted of raping a beauty pageant contestant in 1992.
Meanwhile, Tyson's probation officer will file court papers by Monday that could lead to the former heavyweight champion returning to prison.

HOCKEY PLAYER DIES: Chad Silver, a Canadian who played for the Swiss national hockey team, died of a heart attack, according to autopsy results released today. Silver, who had Canadian and Swiss citizenship, was found dead in his apartment Thursday. He was 29.
Football
PLAYERS INDICTED: Four former Northwestern players, including star tailback Dennis Lundy, were indicted on charges of lying to federal grand juries investigating sports betting at the school.
Lundy, Christopher Gamble, Michael Senters and Gregory Gill were charged with perjury for lying about their relationship with student bookie Brian Ballarini. Lundy also was accused of lying by denying that he deliberately fumbled in the 1994 game against Iowa to make certain the team failed to cover the point spread.

MILLION DOLLAR CHALLENGE: Defending champion Nick Price shot a 5-under 67 to take a two-stroke lead over Mark O'Meara, Justin Leonard and Bernhard Langer after the first round of the Million Dollar Challenge. Ernie Els was three back at 70, Colin Montgomerie shot a 71, and Tiger Woods topped a four-player group at 72.
