GENOLA -- An asphalt company has received approval to construct batch plants at its gravel pit near here.

The approval by the Genola Town Council this week came over the objection of some residents. Valley Asphalt contracted to pay the town a minimum of $100,000 a year in royalties in exchange for its support. The payments will double the town budget, officials said.

Company officials said the asphalt company will move its concrete and asphalt batch plants from Leland near Spanish Fork to the new site.

The expansion was already a permitted use in the county, but asphalt company officials wanted community support to ensure the county Board of Adjustment would grant the approval.

The approval must be reviewed in five years. The company was also restricted from bringing more than 10 percent of outside aggregate to the site for processing.

Valley Asphalt can appeal the conditions, and residents who objected can appeal the decision. They have 30 days to file an appeal with the 4th District Court.
