ST. GEORGE, UT--John Davis Smith, 81, died of acute Leukemia Thursday, December 3, 1998 at the Dixie Regional Medical Center.
He was born September 26, 1917 in Livingston, MT to Vard and Carolyn Davis Smith. He married Melva Tracey Trent October 16, 1971 in Idaho Falls.John spent his youth in Livingston, MT. He lived in Idaho Falls from 1948 to 1973, until moving to Salt Lake City where he resided until relocating to St. George 1982. He graduated from the University of Nebraska in 1939 with a degree in Civil Engineering. John was one of the founders of Ready-To-Pour Concrete, Idaho Falls, in 1948 and was president until the company merged with Utah Sand & Gravel of Salt Lake City, forming MonRoc, Inc. in 1973. John was president of this company until 1982.
He had been active in the Rotary Club of Salt Lake, and a member of the Lions Club and Rotary of Idaho Falls. He enjoyed the outdoors, especially planting trees. He was an avid golfer.
John was an active member of the Episcopal Church for 56 years and served in many capacities.
He is survived by his wife, Melva; daughter: Sandra Jones of Seattle, WA; Gaylord (Dixie) Smith of Salt Lake City; two grandchildren: Gregory of Fairhope, AL; Jason of Salt Lake City; stepchildren: Tracey Trent; Kris Trent; and Kevin Trent; a sister: Virginia Gaab and her children, Carolee Bronson and Shelly Blatter; a sister-in-law Charlene Kidd; several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death in 1971 by his first wife, Marian Kidd.
Memorial services will be Monday, December 7, 1998 at 10 a.m. at Grace Episcopal Church, 1072 East 900 South, St. George.
