Elder W. Eugene Hansen, emeritus General Authority, was presented the Utah State Bar's Distinguished Service Award Nov. 20 for his exemplary professional career as an attorney.
Elder Hansen, who was granted emeritus status at general conference Oct. 3, was honored at the annual Past Presidents Dinner in Salt Lake City. Attending the event were many past presidents of the Bar, including President James E. Faust, second counselor in the First Presidency.The award was presented to Elder Hansen in recognition of his leadership to the Bar, his example of professionalism and his worldwide humanitarian service. He practiced law for more than 30 years before being called as a General Authority and was known throughout the state for his courtroom skills.
He received a bachelor's degree in agricultural economics from Utah State University and a juris doctorate from the University of Utah. From 1950 to 1980, he served in the U.S. Army Reserve and was on active duty during the Korean War.
Elder Hansen was sustained to the First Quorum of the Seventy April 1, 1989. He was called to the Presidency of the Seventy Aug. 15, 1993, and served in the presidency until he was granted emeritus status.
He is married to the former Jeanine Showell, and they are parents of six children.
