Getting there: American, Taca and Iberia fly nonstop from Miami to San Pedro Sula.Documents: A valid passport, but no visa, is required of American citizens.

Health: Tap water is not safe to drink. Avoid uncooked or undercooked foods. Typhoid, malaria, cholera, dengue fever and hepatitis A are risks in Honduras.

Climate: At 2,000 feet above sea level, Copan is somewhat cooler and less humid than the lowlands. Rainy season is from May to December. February, March and April are the most popular times to visit.

Accommodations: The 40-room Hotel Marina Copan is the largest hotel in town. The 15-room La Madrugada also is good.
