The Utah Museum of Fine Arts will open two new exhibits, "Portraits on Paper from the Museum Collection," curated by Will South, and "Winter Celebrations," curated by the museum docents. Both exhibits open today, Dec. 6, and run through March 14. "Winter Celebration" explores the different cultures around the world which celebrate winter holidays such as Chanukah, Ramadan, Kwanzaa, Chinese New Year and Christmas. "Portraits on Paper" features drawings, etchings, lithograhs and woodcuts from the 18th-20th century depicting people of all ages."A Woman's View: The Photography of Elfie Huntington (1868-1949)" has returned for public viewing in the Utah Historical Society's Board Room. "The photography of Elfie Huntington shows . . . affection for the people she loved and the place she lived," said Cary Stevens Jones, exhibit curator. Huntington captured people in real-life situations like picnics, parades, community celebrations and harvesting. The 38 black and white photographs are on view Monday-Friday, 8 a.m.-5 p.m. For more information call 533-3500.

Karl Momen's new art book "Homage to William Shakespeare and Richard Wagner" is a tribute to the music and literature he loved as a child and an adult. His Shakespeare paintings are inspired by Hamlet, Othello and Julius Ceasar. Das Rheingold and Parsifal, as well as others by Wagner, also served as inspiration. The book will be sold through museums and galleries in Utah. The book includes text by the artist as well as new paintings.

WORKSHOPS AND LECTURES

Don Seegmiller, Utah figurative artist, will give a workshop demonstration on creating fine art on the computer by using a stylus and electronic mouse pad to paint human faces. The demonstration, sponsored by the Utah Information Technologies Association (UITA), will be Tuesday, Dec. 8, 1:30-3 p.m. at the American Express Building, 6985 Union Park Center, Suite 600 (approximately 1300 E. 7000 South). Cost is free to UITA members and $25 to all others.
