SANDY -- A man was seriously hurt when a truck slammed into the side of his car at an intersection Saturday afternoon.

The 23-year-old man was heading west on 9000 South when his car was hit about 12:15 p.m., Sandy Police Sgt. Marty Hooker said. He entered an intersection on State Street, and a truck making a left turn from 9000 South eastbound collided with the car.The impact sent the victim's car into a car stopped for the traffic light on State Street. The 23-year-old suffered head injuries, Hooker said. Paramedics transported him by helicopter to LDS Hospital.

Police said no one else was injured.

Investigators are still working out the details.

"Some witnesses said the light was yellow. Others said it was red. We're not sure what happened yet," Hooker said.

The crash was one of dozens of car accidents that have kept police busy since a snowstorm blanketed the Wasatch Front on Friday. State troopers responded to 51 wrecks on the freeways Friday night and Saturday morning, Utah Highway Patrol Lt. Verdi White II said. Icy and snow-packed roads were to blame for most of the accidents.

The most serious happened on I-15 at about 5200 South. A motorist inspecting damage just after an accident was hit by another vehicle, White said, adding he wasn't sure how serious the injuries were.
