DETROIT (AP) -- A police officer died a day after being hit by automatic gunfire during a chase, while another remained in critical condition Monday. Three suspects were in custody.

Officer Shawn Bandy, 23, who was shot in the head, died Sunday night after he was taken off life support at the request of his family, said Zoila Brown, a spokeswoman for St. John Hospital.Lloyd Todd, 34, remained in critical condition after surgery for his head injuries. A third officer, Ramon Childs, was treated for injuries from shattered glass and released.

The three had tried to stop a van late Saturday night that police believed was involved in an abduction connected to drugs. During a chase, their cars were pelted by shots fired from what appeared to be a "high-power, assault-type weapon," police Chief Benny Napoleon said.

An uninjured officer said the gunfire was so heavy the bullets shook his car.

Police found the van near the site of the shooting, on the city's east side, Napoleon said. Officers were still searching for the weapon.

Three suspects were being questioned Monday morning and police expect to file charges later, Officer Wallace Farmer said. Two men surrendered Sunday afternoon, and the third was taken into custody Sunday evening.

Bandy, a four-year veteran of the force, was the son of a Detroit police officer. He was engaged to be married. Todd is a five-year veteran of the department.
