OREM -- Students in ROTC programs at Brigham Young University and Utah Valley State College last month won top honors at the five-state regional Ranger Challenge in Monterrey, Calif.

The team, a mix of students from both Utah County schools, competed in six categories. Cadets were judged on personal physical fitness, rope-bridge building skills, an obstacle course, rifle marksmanship with M16s, a land-navigational course and a 10K road march. In addition to the team's top ranking, four first-place trophies were won in individual events.

"A competition like Ranger Challenge is important because it gives students the training to become leaders," said Capt. Pul Dunn, the ROTC adviser at Utah Valley.
