LAYTON -- The city has six culinary water wells and now will be getting another.
The City Council has approved spending $367,600 to drill a new, 1,100-foot-deep well at 1925 N. Fort Lane.City Public Works Director Terry Coburn said Layton was extremely fortunate to be able to drill this well, likely the last one the city will be permitted.
He said a few years ago the state issued a moratorium on all new deep wells along the Wasatch Front. Layton was only able to receive an exemption because it consolidated all its leftover water rights.
The new well is being drilled by the Layne-Western Company on the southwest corner of the city shop property.
Coburn said when completed, the well will be capped until the water is needed for expected growth in the Church Street and Hill Field portions of the city.
Layton's water system has a capacity of 21.2 million gallons per day, while the average daily water consumption is about 10 million gallons. The city has a water storage capacity of 16.3 million gallons.
