EDINBURGH, Scotland (AP) -- The new Museum of Scotland is seeking a rare letter written by Scottish hero William Wallace that was recently discovered in Germany.
The 13th century letter, discovered in the German city of Lubeck, is considered invaluable to the museum because so far it is the only authenticated object associated with Wallace, whose life was the inspiration for the hit movie "Braveheart."The museum, which opened in Edinburgh last week, said Monday that it will seek a copy or a loan of the letter, written in Latin following Wallace's victory over the English at the Battle of Stirling Bridge in 1297.
It notifies the people of north Germany that Scotland is free from the "power of the English" and invites them to reopen trade routes through Scottish ports.
A second copy of the letter was delivered to Hamburg, but it is believed to have been destroyed during World War II.
