SOUTH SALT LAKE -- Two employees of a waste disposal company were exposed to hazardous chemicals Tuesday morning when they attempted to empty a trash bin belonging to a woodworking business.
After the 10 a.m. incident, the pair were taken to an area hospital as a precaution and later released, South Salt Lake Police Capt. Beau Babka said.It took hazardous material crews close to five hours to remove the liquid chemicals and determine what they were, Babka said. Crews were able to determine one of the liquids was an organic printing base.
Babka said someone illegally dumped the chemicals in the waste bin at 300 W. 3700 South. The chemicals now have been safely removed and destroyed, Babka said.
Investigators are going through the contents of the bin to determine who might have dumped the hazardous products. Babka said the culprits could face steep fines and criminal penalties.
