SkyWest plane makes precautionary landing

A SkyWest airplane made a precautionary landing at Salt Lake International Airport Saturday after pilots feared the landing gear had malfunctioned.

The Brazilian-made EMB 120 touched down about 12:30 p.m. without any injury to its 27 passengers or damage to the plane, said James Boyd, vice president for customer relations for SkyWest Airlines. The small, propeller-driven airplane was heading for Sun Valley, Idaho, when a warning light in the cockpit indicated the landing gear was not functioning, Boyd said. The pilots decided to return to Salt Lake International, where it had departed at 11:30 a.m.

Fearing the landing gear might collapse on touchdown, ambulances and airport fire trucks lined the runway. The plane's landing gear locked in place and held fine. The indicator light was faulty not the landing gear, Boyd said.
