Carter to be hospitalized for a `persistent' skin rash

Jimmy Carter will enter Emory University Hospital today to be treated for an "aggravating and persistent" skin rash, the Carter Center said Friday.

The former president has had the rash for about six months, and it has not responded to a variety of outpatient treatments, including salves and oral medication, spokeswoman Carrie Harmon said.Doctors hope the controlled hospital environment will help them diagnose and cure the rash, she said. They have already determined it is not life-threatening or indicative of a serious medical condition.
