The Utah House has passed a measure that would grant the first increase in witness fees in nearly a decade.
The measure, sponsored by Rep. David Zolman, R-West Valley, would increase the per diem paid to witnesses from $17 to $20 for the first day. Fees for every day thereafter would be dramatically increased to $49 a day.Zolman said nearly 90 percent of trials are settled in one day. Citizens who have to miss work or suffer the inconvenience of longer trials deserve the additional remuneration, he said.
Fees were last increased in 1989.
The bill passed on a vote of 68-3. It would cost roughly $440,000 to implement.
