Charlotte J. Gordon was born in Ogden, Utah on May 7, 1922, the second child of Dr. C. B. and Arlene P. Johnson.
Attending Ogden schools, she graduated from Weber College in 1942. Shortly thereafter, she married Joseph William Sander. They had a son, Bill. World War II claimed the life of her husband. In 1948, she and Billy married Oakley J. Gordon. The had two more children, Pamela and Oakley E. The family expanded to include seven grandchildren. Bill married Shannon Erickson and they had two children, Heidi and Peter. Pam married Paul Jacob and they added three, Frith, Katil and Tully. Oakley (Ted) married Betsy Benedict and they had Oakley (Ben) and Christopher.Charlotte dearly loved this family and they returned that love many fold. She was a wonderful companion, parent and grandmother. She was a beautiful role model for us all, a model of wisdom, wit and compassion. She also extended herself to other relatives, friends and strangers, who didn't remain strangers for very long. Among those relatives are her brothers, Budd and Frank Johnson, their families and those of her deceased brother, Joseph Johnson. Again with reciprocal love.
To her community, she served as president of the University of Utah Newcomers organization, as a board member of Youth Incorporated and Utah Mental Health, as a member of the Women's Legislative Council and as chairmen of her unit of the League of Women Voters. Also, she and Oakley were virtually life-long members of their Book Discussion Group.
At this point, with a fruitful life, Charlotte or "Cholly," died peacefully at home on Thursday morning, February 5, 1998.
