Counseling bill would benefit at-risk senior citizens

At-risk senior citizens will get counseling and referral services if a proposal becomes law.

HB111, sponsored by Rep. J. Brent Haymond, R-Springville, would require the state's Area Agencies on Aging to provide counseling on options about in-home care and nursing homes.Haymond is asking lawmakers for $480,000 to increase community-based services so those who choose to stay in their own homes won't be placed on a waiting list for services.

Michael J. Deily, director of the Division of Health Care Financing, said the proposal would allow people to make informed decisions about their care.

The House Health and Human Services Standing Committee unanimously endorsed the bill.
