New Mexico coach Dave Bliss has apologized to Western Athletic Conference Commissioner Karl Benson, saying he overreacted to Benson's comments on officiating during a New Mexico-Utah game Feb. 1.
"I was emotionally upset for what I perceived as him (Benson) taking away what our team battled to get, which was a hard-earned win over Utah," Bliss said Tuesday.Benson said Wednesday that he accepted Bliss' apology.
Benson said last week that WAC referee Lonnie Dixon should have called a foul against New Mexico guard Royce Olney during a crucial play in the final minute of the Lobos' 77-74 victory over then No. 3-ranked Utah.
With Utah leading 73-69, Olney stripped Utah point guard Andre Miller of the ball on an inbounds play, stepped behind the 3-point line and fired in a shot that helped set up Olney's game-winning 3-pointer.
Benson said he received "well over 100 complaints" from the public on the non-call.
