Judge draws pay despite charges

Prosecutors allege Justice Court Judge Patricia Chavez stole $2,240 in court funds from Kanab.

But for the 19 months that Chavez was on leave while her case languished, she continued to draw her $30,000 annual salary from the southern Utah city.Justice court judges - appointed to four-year terms by city and county officials - cannot be removed mid-term unless they are criminally convicted or by order of the Utah Supreme Court.

The Chavez case is to be tried in March after numerous delays. Chavez is charged with five counts of misusing public monies, all third-degree felonies carrying prison terms of up to five years.
