LDS theater planned LDS Church leaders

LDS Church leaders plan a 900-seat theater on the northwest corner of the downtown block housing the new LDS assembly building to take the place of the Promised Valley Playhouse.

"It will be a very high-end, legitimate theater," said project manager Tom Hanson.

The Promised Valley Playhouse was closed in January 1997 due to structural problems. Even though its replacement is now in design and construction, Salt Lake County announced Wednesday that the Playhouse may enjoy a renaissance. It released a request for proposals for architects to study the feasibility of restoring it.

The Promised Valley Playhouse was included in the county's comprehensive study of Salt Lake performing arts venues last fall.
