Jazz to sign Cunningham to 10-day contract

Utah Jazz center Greg Ostertag will be placed on the injured list today and will miss three to six weeks recovering from a stress fracture to his lower left leg.

William Cunningham will take Ostertag's place on the 12-man active roster - for now, at least. Cunningham, a 6-foot-11-inch, 295-pound center out of Temple University ('96), was expected to sign a 10-day contract today - assuming he passed the team's physical exam. He was a member of the Jazz entrant in last summer's Rocky Mountain Revue, where he averaged 2.2 points and 3.4 rebounds in 15.6 minutes per game.

Cunningham was signed by the Boston Celtics during the preseason, but was cut nine days later prior to the season opener. He's been working out in Phoenix since then.

With the trading deadline now less than a week away - the last day teams can make trades is Thursday - Jazz vice president Scott Layden said he'll be in touch with other clubs to see if any attractive offers come up.

"We'll still talk on the phone to other teams until Thursday," Layden said, "but we don't anticipate any moves."
