Freshman Jeff Monaco scored 20 of his career-high 22 points in the second half to push Southern Utah to a 71-62 win over the University of Missouri-Kansas City in the Centrum Thursday night.
SUU's win snapped UMKC's five-game win streak and avenged an 80-51 thumping by the Kangaroos in Kansas City last month.Monaco, a true freshman, whose previous high was 19 points at UTEP, hit a pair of three-pointers late in the second half to move SUU out to a 60-52 lead and the 'Birds were never threatened again.
SUU's leading scorer Kenyatta Clyde, who struggled horribly at Youngstown State and Valparaiso last week, re-emerged to score 15 points and grab seven rebounds. Sherod Dent led the Kangaroos with 13.
The win moves SUU to 6-16 overall and 3-9 in the Mid-Continent Conference. UMKC falls to 8-14 overall, 6-6 in league play.
